7 mistakes almost everyone makes when buying a mattress topper (and how to avoid them)

KomfortKissen Sleep GuideUpdated: 27 August 20269 min read

Since our Premium Komfort Topper has been turning up more and more often in sleep forums and comment sections, we receive the same questions every day. We answer the most frequent ones here — honestly and in order.

Memory foam toppers have been around for years. But most of them are bought the wrong way. Here are the 7 most common mistakes — and how to avoid them.

TO THE PREMIUM KOMFORT TOPPER

MISTAKE #1 Not all toppers are the same

KomfortKissen box and the gel memory foam layer under the bamboo viscose cover

This is the most common mistake of all.

The listing says “memory foam” — so many people think every topper works the same way. It doesn't.

Egg-crate foam is not memory foam. A 2 cm pad is not a 7 cm comfort layer. Plain memory foam is not gel memory foam.

You don't need an engineering degree to tell the difference. Look for what you can't see in the product photo: tested materials. The textiles of our topper are tested for harmful substances according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (certificate SH025 165608, TESTEX).

Cheap products cut corners exactly where you can't see it in the listing photo.

MISTAKE #2 Buying the cheapest topper — “it'll do”

Where cheap toppers fail: flat after weeks, thinner than stated, no certificate

This is the most expensive mistake.

Cheap foam pads are everywhere: marketplaces, discount stores, promotional shelves.

But that doesn't mean you'll get the same foam inside. Not the same construction. Not the same cover. And not the same result.

Honestly: for something we spend a third of our lives on, it pays to be precise.

So don't compare a topper with the cheapest pad on the shelf. Compare it with the bad buy you won't keep, won't recommend to anyone and will end up replacing anyway.

That's the real price.

We looked through the market ourselves — and exactly that quickly became obvious.

There were egg-crate pads at bargain prices. Huge promises. Anonymous marketplace listings. Products that promised 7 cm and were closer to 5. Covers that felt like plastic film. Listings without a single certificate on the page.

Much of it looked almost identical. What you actually get is not.

So instead of guessing, we put 10 common listings side by side and checked the basics:

  • Actual height
  • Foam type
  • Cover fabric
  • Certificates
  • Trial period & returns

After this first round, 3 were left. Then came the real question: does the product deliver what the ad promises?

In the end, only one met all the points: our Premium Komfort Topper. Yes — we are biased. That's why: check the list above yourself. It works for any seller.

Our comparison is a listing check based on manufacturer information — not a lab test. But even that is enough to rule out most listings.

MISTAKE #3 Looking only at the height — instead of the complete construction

A memory foam comfort layer is not a gimmick.

The layer your body actually touches determines how your bed feels.

But height alone isn't the whole picture.

Our topper wasn't built around a number. It combines 7 cm gel memory foam (firmness H3) with a breathable bamboo viscose cover and a non-slip underside — so it absorbs pressure, feels fresh and stays in place.

Because at night, nobody thinks about centimetres. You think about lying comfortably. Feeling at ease. Not dreading your own bed.

That is exactly what makes a well-thought-out construction smarter than a thicker slab.

MISTAKE #4 Thinking every foam topper smells and traps heat

Is there affordable gel memory foam? Yes. Does it have to smell and feel warm? No.

This is the point that makes many people suspicious.

Memory foam has a reputation: a chemical smell when unpacking, heat build-up in the middle of the night.

With untested cheap products, that reputation is deserved — the smell comes from what was mixed in, the heat build-up from dense foam under a film.

Done right, the picture changes: textiles tested for harmful substances (OEKO-TEX® Standard 100), gel infusion and a breathable bamboo viscose cover instead of polyester film — this provides a pleasantly fresh feel when lying on it.

(To be honest: even tested memory foam may smell slightly at first. This fades within the first 24 hours while it expands.)

So “affordable” doesn't have to mean “smells and traps heat”. It just has to be made right.

MISTAKE #5 Ordering the wrong size

Sounds trivial. Happens all the time.

A topper only works if it covers the entire lying surface: mattress 140 × 200? Then topper 140 × 200. Not “almost”.

A topper that is too small slips and leaves edges. One that is too large creases.

That's why ours comes in 9 sizes — from 80 × 200 to 220 × 200 cm. Also for box spring beds and oversized beds.

Measure the mattress, not the bed frame. That's the whole rule.

MISTAKE #6 Fear of losing your money if it doesn't suit you

A return request, answered by KomfortKissen customer service

As you can see: your money isn't gone. Every order comes with a 100-night trial — you try it out at home for more than three full months.

If the topper doesn't suit you, register in our returns centre, send it back and get the purchase price refunded (return at your own cost). The details are set out in our trial period terms; your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Don't make it complicated. Try it for 100 nights — and pay attention to the three things we paid attention to when trying it out ourselves:

  • First the lying surface: no more noticeable dip under hips and shoulders.
  • Then the feel: soft, yet supportive.
  • And the temperature: the gel layer feels pleasantly cool.

Nothing dramatic overnight.

But enough to stick with it.

MISTAKE #7 Fixing a sagging mattress yourself — sounds easier than it is

The DIY route: plywood and folded blankets under a sagging mattress

Of course we tried it ourselves first.

Bad idea.

Technically, you can prop up a sagging mattress. That doesn't make it right.

  • The plywood board underneath made the bed as hard as a table.
  • Folded blankets in the dip had turned into lumps by Tuesday.
  • Turning it weekly only moved the dip.

And even then, the surface never felt the way we'd hoped.

It's exactly this experiment that makes a purpose-built comfort layer so much more valuable.

It's simpler.

And it works.

The topper checklist to finish:

Why does all this matter?

Because the wrong topper can mean a chemical smell, a pad that slides off the bed, foam that is flat after a month — and another bad buy that ends up in the cupboard after three nights.

Rule 1: Check the foam. Not because “gel infusion” sounds fancy, but because tested gel memory foam behaves differently — in terms of smell, heat build-up and durability.
Rule 2: Look at the complete construction. Foam matters — but a good product solves more than one problem: a breathable, removable and washable cover, a non-slip underside, precisely fitting sizes.
Rule 3: Check the trial period and terms. A genuine 100-night trial with clear terms shows that the seller expects you to keep it.
Rule 4: Buy from the official shop. No anonymous listings, no copycats, no products that can't be verified.
Rule 5: Don't judge all toppers by one bad one. A pad that didn't do anything in the past may simply have been the wrong foam, the wrong height or the wrong quality.

Is the topper right for me?

Year 7 with a sagging mattress or tonight with the 7 cm comfort layer

It may suit you if your lying surface is too hard for you, you build up heat at night or feel every spring — but the mattress underneath is too good (or too expensive) to throw away.

It's not about accepting poor sleep. It's about renewing the layer that has actually given way — and keeping the rest.

That's exactly what a smart solution feels like.

The difference isn't made by a single promise, but by the overall picture:

  • 7 cm gel memory foam, a solid core
  • Firmness H3
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tested textiles (SH025 165608 TESTEX)
  • Bamboo viscose cover, removable & washable
  • Non-slip underside
  • 9 sizes: 80 × 200 to 220 × 200 cm
  • Delivery in 2–5 working days
  • 100-night trial
